RHS4022 - Qualitative research

In this module students will be introduced into the specific characteristics, applications and design of the main qualitative research paradigms. After an introduction into the ontological, epistemological and methodological underpinnings of these paradigms the usual steps in the conduction of the qualitative study will be studied (formulation of qualitative problem statement, (the use of) theory and literature review in qualitative research, study design, data collection, data analysis & interpretation, and writing scientific papers based on qualitative data). Attention will be paid to the quality criteria that go with each of the steps in the research process. Students will be invited to apply their theoretical knowledge on these steps when working on the proposal for a qualitative study that constitutes the module exam. Students will also have the opportunity to practice with some of the major data collection techniques in qualitative research during a series of skills trainings on participant observation, (focus group and other group) interviews, and data analysis.

All tutorials, lectures and practicals are planned on Thursdays.
